Phonics and Early Reading
Phonics and Early Reading
At Stourfield Infant and Junior School, we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds and Rapid Catch-up programmes to teach early reading. We start teaching phonics in Reception and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. The Little Wandle Rapid Catch-Up is an accelerated catch-up programme for children in Year 2 and above who are not reading at the expected level for their age. It mirrors the main Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme, but has been created to help children catch up quickly.
